It's been a minute. Britt here from Shirk Magazine – it's been months since I've made a proper post on Shirk (which I immensely apologize for); but life gets in the way, things get busy, time flies yadda yadda yadda. The good news is that I'll be making an effort to give ya'll regular content and posts because Shirk Magazine is celebrating our TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY! That's right – I started this dumb little blog a decade ago in my last year of college in 2008. Obviously a lot has happened since then. I often find myself scrolling through the archives, wincing in embarrassment. But all this is me, this is my blog and my life and if I can find any way to make someone's day a little better by sharing music, art, fashion, opinions, stories, insight, a laugh, whatever – then why not dedicate 2018 to spending a little more time doing something that makes me happy? I love to write, and I love to create. We've got a lot of catching up to do!

A lot has happened In the last year and half – I've gotten married to my incredible husband Jesse, have made some precious memories with our dear friends and family, traveled, seen so much live music and our careers have both been quite busy and only getting busier, which is amazing! Jesse is a professional drummer and his own group No Warning just released their first full-length studio album since 2004 Torture Culture. It's getting solid reviews, and they played a lot of sold-out shows this year. He's also been drumming with the legendary Canadian rock group The Headstones since the summer. I won't see much of him this year but I'm incredibly proud of him and support him in every which way!

Meanwhile my DJ Blush stuff has just skyrocketed this past year. I feel 2016 was the year where I got my act together and really dove in nose-first to making this job/business/DJ life something serious; I had many years of practice before, figuring my shit out. Going solo was the best decision I had ever made. Once you drop the weight of bad business partners, decisions and situations and see things clearly I knew I had figured out what path I want to be on! 2017 was the year I figured out what I want and who I want to be. I am so honoured to say that I was back at Molson Amphitheatre (Budweiser Stage, now!) this past summer and will return for my 6th season this upcoming summer as the resident AMEX Lounge DJ – and when I'm not there I'm DJ'ing and booking Stones Place! I am incredibly at home and so happy with both my jobs; I work with amazing people and get to play people music for a living... what would be better? I'm constantly trying to better myself, better my business and better the lives of the people closest to me in any which way I can – it's all about growing, living, trying new things! I feel that 2018 is best metaphorically envisioned as one running up a giant mountain like a mother-fucking viking – there ain't no slowing me down!

This year is gonna be about ME. Taking care of me. Saying no to things that I don't want to do. Being honest with myself about what makes me happy, if it's worth it, where I wanna be. Treating myself better, putting better things in my body and making better decisions. Letting myself relax more. Going to bed earlier, drinking less. Seeing my Mom more. More travel. Spending more time on bettering my home, spending more time meditating and reading books. Drinking more coffee, trying more foods I've never tried. Getting to know new friends better, letting people know how much I appreciate them more. Demanding what's fair and not sitting down to people trying to jerk me around. Keeping a solid group of amazing people around me at all times. More walks. More laughs. More old movies. Helping people more. Helping my community more. Hugging more. Calling more. Learning more. Painting more. Drawing more. Wearing more colour.

Whatever this year may bring, I'm walking into it feeling strong, feeling lucky, feeling happy.

I hope you all have an amazing year, as well!

Here we go!
